The Plan

The plan is to do a certain number of one DaVinci exercise and then proceed to the next. I arranged the six of the nine activities into concrete and abstract starting with the easiest of the straightforward and ending with the most difficult of the more imagination based drawing skills.

1) Make copies of a master artist’s painting and drawing. Ideally starting from 2d work, then relief and finally renderings of statues.

2)Draw Drapery.

3)Draw the same thing from multiple angles.

4)Draw objects which are in motion without taking a photograph, although a video would work as long as you don’t push pause. I’m very scared of this one.

5)Build a catologue of various objects that you have memorized how to draw that you can pull from your brain at any time. Test your recall by first drawing something with reference and then taking away the reference to see how closely your drawings match.

6)Draw in your minds eye, which we do with clouds already, but, actually draw it.

7)Play perspective games in order to become better at judging distances and sizes. Guesstimate the number of small objects in a photo and then count each one. Guess the dimentions of an object from far away and then test it with an actual ruler. This exercise is not the hardest but one I will mix in whenever I do not have time for actual drawing.

8 and 9)Draw in the company of others. Consider constructive criticism from anyone. I’m already doing this by posting the pictures online although I will start asking for opinions from anyone I show my art to. It might be nice to find a sketching buddy but probably won’t actually happen.  And finally, draw both the divine and the grotesque. There aught to by a wide range of subject matter mixed throughout the various drawings. Just something to keep in mind.
