Tuesday, August 11, 2015 Feast of Saint Philomena

So far it suits me to make one post per picture rather than per day. What’s the difference between per entry and per day has something to do with how I work as a Mom and what I am working on right at this moment. As a Mom, it makes sense to have a few different projects going at once so that I can dive immediately into whichever one is more appropriate at that very moment. For example, I worked on the bark sample during the Baby’s nap when I was in the house and could do justice to the detailed nature of a smaller, more portable specimen. On the other hand, I have been working on the tree sketch for several days in the evening when I watched her as she played in the sandbox. The project I’m doing now makes me nervous and that is why the entries are alone on the page and unlike journal entries like in say, the Edith Holden journals I posted as inspiration earlier. I want to be deliberate about how I compose my project when I finally put it all together.

I worked on this today and yesterday. It is meant to be a kind of underpainting where I map out light and shadow. Speaking of shadow, this would be improved by adding the leaf-cast shadows when I add the color.

I was going to make another whole post for August 7, 2015 where I show the green painted over the shadow sculpture. Then I decided that would be showy and silly. So here it is. Most of the work was already done by today.

So this watercolor took me three days and I guess about 2.5-3 hours. I know there are some issues with the leaf in the back coming forward as opposed to receding back. Are there any other major problems? Any sincere criticism is welcome

I worked on this today and yesterday. It is my first time using the drybrush technique in watercolor. LOVE AT FIRST STROKE! I picked a slightly complicated subject.

August 1, 2015

Here is my first entry. I like that it’s on August 1 and August is named after the first Roman emperor. Hopefully this country diary is not as ill fated.
